GalNet-2 Switched Ethernet Controllers

Introduced in 1998, the Marvell GalNet-2 family now comprises more than twelve products, from Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet switch controllers, to G.Link crossbars and bridges. GalNet-2 products offer the industry's most comprehensive switched platform for Layer 2 and Layer 3 Ethernet switching systems. Applications for GalNet-2 products range from Small Office/Home Office to stacking and state of the art features such as converged networking support.

The GalNet-2-based systems use our proprietary G.Link bus to interconnect switch controllers and crossbar switch fabrics. The flexible G.Link bus supports development of very high-performance systems via its high bandwidth and the Marvell's G.Link crossbar switches. Crossbars are used to route messaging and data between distributed switch controllers and the management CPU complex.

The Marvell G.Link crossbar switches range from 4 to 12 G.Link ports to support development of a wide variety of system architectures. Crossbars may also be interconnected in meshes to support larger numbers of G.Link ports. GalNet-2 crossbars are also used with GalNet-2+ and GalNet-3 switched Ethernet controllers, for advanced Layer 2 and Layer 3/4/5 system applications.

The GalNet-2 switched Ethernet controllers support a wide range of features and configurations. These switches can be combined to build systems with up to 256 Fast Ethernet ports, 32 Gigabit Ethernet ports, or combinations using up to 32 switch controllers and CPUs.

Major benefits of the GalNet-2 family are software compatibility among switch controllers and offer shorter time to market by leveraging previously developed code in new system applications, often with little or no modification.
