Marvell Supports New "Wi-Fi Direct" Standard Across Entire Line of 802.11 WLAN Devices
Peer-to-Peer Technology will Accelerate Wi-Fi Adoption Across Consumer Electronics Products
Santa Clara, California (October 14, 2009) – arvell (NASDAQ: MRVL), a leader in storage, communications, and consumer silicon solutions, today announced support for "Wi-Fi Direct", a new Wi-Fi Alliance standard which simplifies secure peer-to-peer communication between 802.11 enabled devices. In supporting the Wi-Fi Direct specification, Marvell strengthens its leadership role in pioneering Wi-Fi adoption across cell phones, portable gaming devices, personal media players and other low power mobile devices.
"Marvell is very pleased that the industry has taken this step forward towards standardizing peer-to-peer connectivity between Wi-Fi enabled clients," noted Partho Mishra Vice
President and General Manager of Marvell's Embedded and Emerging Business Unit. "As the technology impacts all Wi-Fi enabled devices, we're excited at the broad impact and benefits it will have on consumers. Marvell looks forward to shaping how the next generation of wireless products communicates with one another, enabling a rich new set of applications for gaming, social networking and other use cases."
The foundation for Marvell's Wi-Fi Direct offering is the company's pioneering Marvell Mobile Hotspot (MMH) technology. The Marvell Mobile Hotspot offers a full-featured, fully functional, standards compliant 802.11 a/b/g/n access point implemented entirely within the low-power wireless system on chip. With this technology, battery operated consumer electronics can now function as full-featured Wi-Fi access points while concurrently operating as traditional Wi-Fi clients. This capability has fostered new product categories for devices with integrated 802.11 radios which will be expanded upon using Wi-Fi Direct.
A recognized leader in the 802.11 WLAN market, Marvell has numerous customers shipping 802.11-based gaming devices, cellular handsets, digital cameras, MP3 players, VoIP handsets, PCs, access points, and other consumer devices. Wi-Fi Direct will enable these devices to connect to one another directly in a secure and intuitive fashion. Marvell has evaluation kits for Wi-Fi Direct available for customers today and is offering the technology as a software upgrade on existing and future Wi-Fi products.
Marvell (NASDAQ: MRVL) is a leader in the development of storage, communications, and consumer silicon solutions.
