Coherent pluggable optics are converging at 400Gbps transmission, the data rate that is set to play a dominant role in optical networks over the next decade. New 400ZR and 400G ZR+ pluggable coherent modules hold potential for lowering capex and opex and fostering optical layer interoperability. Significantly, by integrating optics directly into routers and switches, coherent pluggables also make possible new architectures for regional, metro, and aggregation networks. This session takes a system and network-level view of the coherent pluggables revolution and focuses specifically on the challenges and opportunities of new architectures based on IP over DWDM.
