Marvell and RADLAN Announce Availability of Complete Layer 2/3/4 Switch Reference Design Supporting Converged Voice/Video/Data

The GalNet-3-Based SR8900 with the RADLAN OpENS™ Portable Software, Featuring Complete Routing, QoS and IP Multicast, Will Be Demonstrated at NetWorld+Interop, Las Vegas

Marvell® (NASDAQ: MRVL), a technology leader in the development of extreme broadband communications solutions, and RADLAN, Inc., a leading provider of innovative routing software and networking technologies, today announced that the SR8900 router, based on Marvell's GalNet®-3 converged voice/video/data switch processors and running RADLAN's OpENS™ Portable Software, is available for production. Marvell and RADLAN are offering the SR8900 mini-chassis-- the first generic and portable system with complete switching, routing, QoS, and IP multicast support -to datacom and telecom system vendors as a complete reference design, allowing customers to significantly speed time-to-market. The fully featured SR8900 system will be demonstrated at both the Marvell and the RADLAN booths (8217 and 8641, respectively) during the NetWorld+Interop show in Las Vegas.

The SR8900 system enables Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to deploy GalNet-3-based systems that provide enhanced QoS and IP multicast features. This combination of hardware and system software allows OEMs to operate both mission-critical applications as well as bandwidth-hungry multicast/multimedia web traffic.

RADLAN's Open and Portable Networking Systems (OpENS) is a portable software package that takes full advantage of GalNet-3 ASIC capabilities and is used to build data communications and telecommunication systems. Its open architecture makes it easy for developers to integrate with different processors or real-time operating systems with minimal effort.

RADLAN's Op-ROS takes full advantage of the GalNet-3 capabilities for packet classification, traffic filtering and bandwidth management using the FACS (Filtering and Classification System) scheme to classify packets by:

  • Destination IP

  • Source IP

  • Protocol

  • Destination Port

  • Source Port

  • DiffServ Code Point

QoS uses the above statements to efficiently sort and classify traffic into service levels, allowing specific amounts of bandwidth to be allocated for particular services. IP multicast offers further bandwidth preservation by preventing duplicate packets to multiple destinations. In addition, the powerful FACS mechanism can be used for filtering traffic traversing numerous VLANs and routing destinations.
