NETGEAR Selects Marvell Prestera™-DX 24 Port Packet Processor, With Advanced QoS and Security Features, for its New GSM7224 Product
Sunnyvale, California (April 27, 2004) –
Marvell® (NASDAQ: MRVL), a technology leader in the development of extreme broadband communications and storage solutions, today announced the availability of its high performance Prestera™-DX160 and -DX240 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) packet processors with integrated SerDes interfaces. The new, Layer 2, managed-16 port and -24 port single-chip devices enable the lowest cost with the best power management solutions for the Small-to-Medium Business (SMB) market. Marvell also announced today that NETGEAR has selected the new Prestera - DX240 for their currently shipping GSM7224, a Layer 2 managed, 24-port Gigabit Ethernet Switch.
“Gigabit Ethernet in the SMB market is a rapidly growing opportunity for us, and our goal is to be the number one supplier for this market,” said Peter Newton, Product Line Manager, NETGEAR, Inc. "We have teamed with Marvell because they understand the SMB market and continue to provide value-add solutions for our award-winning line of managed switch products.”
With the new Prestera-DX devices, the SMB market can now take advantage of high-end benefits in cost optimized solutions. The new stringent security standards such as VLANs and 802.1X Port Authentication are two examples of high-end benefits supported in the new Prestera-DX GbE devices. SMB customers will also benefit from the enterprise-class Quality of Service (QoS) features, which include DiffServ and 802.1p priority support, for such demanding applications as Voice-Over-IP (VOIP) and multimedia. IGMP snooping, another benefit for customers, provides for efficient streaming of video/audio content from the World Wide Web.
“The DX240 and DX160 were designed specifically for the SMB market,” said Paul Valentine, Marvell’s Senior Director, Product Marketing. “Our DX products offer Advanced QoS and security features expected in Enterprise products but in a cost competitive, low power form factor necessary for the SMB market. Through our DX products we are delivering the vision of Gigabit to the desktop.”
The Prestera-DX devices feature non-blocking performance and high integration by combining onto a single chip SerDes interfaces, Gigabit MACs, packet buffer memory, a powerful switch engine, management interfaces, and port mirroring. As a result of the high-integration, the Prestera-DX devices are sold in small, low pin count packages enabling 4-layer PCB design versus the currently available “pin-heavy” RGMII solutions. The DX devices are also designed to offer optimized load balancing across link aggregation for server connectivity and connecting desktop switches to core switches.
In addition, Marvell’s innovative, Virtual Cable Tester™ (VCT) cable diagnostic technology is bundled with the Prestera-DX devices. VCT enables IT managers and end-users to quickly and remotely analyze the quality and attributes of the attached cable plant, helping to pinpoint the cause of network cable malfunctions without deploying field support personnel or bringing down the network. VCT enables a significant reduction in installation time, cable debug efforts and overall network support cost for end-users.
