Santa Clara, California (August 27, 2009) – arvell® (NASDAQ: MRVL), a leader in storage, communications, and consumer silicon solutions, today introduced a comprehensive suite of products for networking multichannel audio/video (A/V) over standardized Ethernet. Drawing on the Company's rich history as an innovator in networking, Marvell is the first to introduce a comprehensive suite of products in support of the IEEE 802.1 A/V Bridging (AVB) standards announced recently. This product portfolio includes Marvell's Link Street® Gigabit Ethernet Switches 88E6350R/88E6350/88E6351, Gigabit Ethernet Network Interface Controller (NIC) – the Yukon® 88E8059, and Kirkwood SoC 88F6000 featuring Sheeva™ CPU technology. The Marvell AVB product suite is designed to allow seamless delivery of time-sensitive multimedia traffic for both consumer and professional A/V applications on an easy-to-configure Ethernet network.
As the volume of digital media content continues to grow exponentially, end users need to access and share this content in a reliable, consistent, and cost effective manner over multiple devices. As a result interfaces such as component video and HDMI are being augmented with proven networking technologies such as Ethernet and Wi-Fi. This shift will drastically simplify the end user experience and will ultimately allow simple Ethernet cabling to replace the multitude of complex and costly cables that are currently used to connect A/V equipment. The Ethernet connectivity is also designed to enable networked A/V equipment and connected PCs to access online content.
"One of the biggest problems in the home media industry is preserving sound and high definition video quality while moving media around the home," said Rob Enderle, Principal analyst for the Enderle Group. "This new AVB enabled equipment directly addresses this problem and, coupled with easy configuration ensures seamless content sharing across A/V and PC networks. It assures the delivery of high quality multimedia and time sensitive content that the home electronics market has long desired."
"We are thrilled to be the first to provide an end-to-end AVB solution and be part of the newly formed AVnu™ Alliance," said Ali Khan, Director of Marketing with the Communications and Computing Business Unit at Marvell. "We also congratulate AVnu for bringing industry wide collaboration together to support the years of standards development in the IEEE AVB committee. Marvell sees this as the next phase in the Ethernet evolution."
Marvell AVB technology provides resource and timing guarantees that are designed to allow superior real time A/V experiences for the end user. Historically, Ethernet protocols would allow A/V data to drop during periods of heavy congestion resulting in dropped frames, visual artifacts such as jerky video, frozen images, and unsynchronized audio. Marvell AVB technology guarantees quality of service and intelligently reserves bandwidth for A/V data enabling seamless listening and viewing experiences for end users.
Marvell has several customers evaluating or developing platforms with its current portfolio of AVB products. The current Marvell AVB products include switches, SOCs and a PC network interface controller.
The Marvell AVB product suite, Marvell's Link Street® Gigabit Ethernet Switches 88E6350R/88E6350/88E6351, Gigabit Ethernet Network Interface Controller (NIC) – the Yukon® 88E8059, and Marvell Kirkwood SoC 88F6000, is designed for use in platforms including, switches, gateways, routers, PCs, NAS systems and consumer electronics devices that are now adding Ethernet connectivity.
The Marvell Link Street® 88E6350R is a 7-port Gigabit Ethernet switch integrating five triple speed 10/100/1000 PHYs and two RGMII ports and is packaged in a 14mm x 14mm 128-QFP, making it the smallest footprint Gigabit Ethernet switch in the market today. The 88E6350 is packaged in a 20mm x 20mm 176-QFP and provides support for GMII interfaces as well as RGMII. The 88E6351 is pin compatible to the 88E6350 in a 20mm x 20mm 176-QFP package, and adds Synchronous Ethernet support on top of the other features available.
The Yukon 88E8059 is the world's first 55nm Gigabit Ethernet LAN controller for Clients and Embedded systems. It is part of the Yukon LAN controller family of products found in the world's top PC platforms.
The Kirkwood 88F6000 series of SoCs are designed with extensive I/O integration, low power consumption, and high performance making them an excellent choice for complex applications, such as digital home media servers. These SoCs allow direct integration of wireless chipsets, USB peripherals, VoIP devices, hard disks, and other components that are required for consumer electronics. The crossbar architecture ensures high system performance by minimizing data latency and provides equitable servicing of integrated interfaces.
The 88E6350R, 88E6350, and 88E6351 are in production today.
