Wi-Fi Alliance Selects Marvell to Participate in Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Passpoint™ Test Bed

Program Participants Will Partner to Drive Adoption of Wi-Fi Alliance Hotspot 2.0 Specification and Improve Global Connectivity

Santa Clara, California (June 26, 2012) – Marvell (Nasdaq: MRVL) today announced its participation in the Wi-Fi Alliance’s Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Passpoint™ test bed program. Marvell, and the Wi-Fi Alliance, alongside leading device makers and operators, will work together to drive standards-based certification of Passpoint, which will deliver a cellular-like connectivity experience to Wi-Fi networks.

“Implementing wireless technologies that enable a seamless end-user experience and generate new revenue streams for wireless carriers is an essential next step for the evolution of the telecom industry,” said Bart Giordano, director of wireless marketing at Marvell Semiconductor, Inc. “Leveraging the technology behind Passpoint across Marvell’s entire family of Avastar wireless solutions enables us to build a truly global wireless network, allowing consumers to hop off a plane anywhere in the world and automatically connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot – regardless of where their carrier is based. We look forward to continuing our work in the Wi-Fi Alliance to bring an always on, always connected wireless experience to end users leveraging Wi-Fi Hotspot networks around the world.”

Passpoint offers a consistent, streamlined Wi-Fi hotspot connection process and supports the use of one set of account credentials for multiple hotspots. All Passpoint-certified devices implement a single solution for many operator networks based on widely-used technologies. Passpoint’s underlying technology allows service providers to ease data offload and enable roaming agreements, effectively reducing development costs for operators and enabling new revenue streams, making Wi-Fi a true extension of service provider networks. Additionally, Passpoint-certified devices work across vendors and have Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2™) security protections.

“Marvell’s involvement in the Wi-Fi Alliance underscores its commitment to driving interoperability and we commend their commitment to the vision behind Passpoint,” said Edgar Figueroa, chief executive officer of the Wi-Fi Alliance. “Industry adoption of Passpoint-certified solutions will significantly transform both the consumer and operator experience. Marvell’s participation in the development of this program has been important to help enable simple, seamless Wi-Fi connectivity on a global scale.”

Through comprehensive testing, the Passpoint test bed program will ensure that wireless local area networking (WLAN) products from multiple manufacturers work together. This certification leads to improved user-experience, higher customer satisfaction rates, fewer support calls and product returns, reduced costs and the interoperability in Wi-Fi hotspots.
