5G offers new and enhanced classes of connectivity for Ultra-reliable Low Latency Communications (URLLC), Massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC) and Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) services. Among the transformative effects of 5G is a software defined network slicing capability. Instead of a network architecture where all devices share the same communication channels, carriers can partition physical network resources into virtual instances of private enterprise connectivity, offering application-optimized connectivity or tiered services with differing levels of bandwidth, security, and latency. Enterprise customers seeking a dedicated 5G network are working with RAN vendors and integrators to deploy 5G on private or shared radio frequencies, such as the Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) band in the U.S. Whether for public or private 5G, Marvell continues to push the envelope of performance, features and efficiency with its OCTEON Fusion® RAN portfolio, helping its customers set the pace of innovation in 5G.
With increasing system complexity, successful 5G evolution increasingly depends upon incorporating Al/ML technology into planning, deployment and operation of the network. Automation across the network will help scale 5G performance and efficiency in the face of exponential growth in traffic, devices and security threats. This industry vision has given rise to the RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) in O-RAN Alliance standards application of Al/ML in the RAN. Al is being used to enhance complex functions from radio channel modeling and massive MIMO beamforming at the edge to service orchestration and SLA assurance in the core. Al also plays a crucial role in improving early security threat detection, as the trend towards open and disaggregated multi-vendor networks is increasing the number of potential attack surfaces. Marvell has incorporated in-line Al/ML hardware accelerators in its latest OCTEON multi-core processors, enabling optimized edge inferencing in the 5G RAN to help fuel our world with intelligent connectivity.
