Abstract: Ethernet has become the essential switching fabric for in-vehicle-networks. While traffic flows over the Ethernet backbone of the car is mostly continuous and symmetrical, there are some links within the network that generate bursty traffic and some endpoints, like sensors and displays, that exchange data in a continuous and asymmetrical manner. Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) is an IEEE standard feature that is designed to reduce power of Ethernet links that are not fully symmetrical. In this presentation, we will examine emerging use cases that are generating more bursty and asymmetrical Ethernet over the IVN both in the backbone links as well as for the on-board connectivity with sensors and displays. We will define the specific requirements of these links with regard to QoS and power dissipation and demonstrate how EEE will support all of these applications with optimal performance and enhanced energy efficiency.
